Bells
Jingle Bells, church bells, sleigh bells, bell ringers, oven timer bells and alarm clock bells. Everyday is Christmas here, without the bells. Books arrive, are unwrapped and displayed with care. Escape the bells in your head and the clutter of details in our quiet, homey bookstore. Bring your guests to Berkman’s, have a cup of coffee, or just be.

You may have noticed I have not been at the store quite so much or that there has not been a newsletter in months. I have taken a job at Hasting’s in Kerrville. The thing I miss the most is keeping in touch with you through the newsletter and blog. However, a paycheck is totally awesome!
Working at a big corporate store has made it quite clear that there is nothing in this world like Berkman Books. Two bookstores could not be more different, like in different orbits. It drives home the importance of keeping small stores alive. Not only is our space creative and beautiful, we have a refuge for the rare and classic, familiar and forgotten, where books live. Most have lived many lives.
Certainly big stores fill a need and readers still appreciate a good book wherever it comes from. Even with the distractions of overhead announcements and the occasional sound of a whoopee cushion emanating from the giggly goofy gift department, there are still conversations and stories shared. Even with booksellers running back and forth to keep up with constant corporate demands, they (we) are knowledgeable book lovers and always gratified to send a reader home with a book in hand.
The most noticeable difference: the experience. And they don’t have a kitty. And their door is not constantly blowing open. - Lucy

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
